The Sipsters Studio
Home - Indiana

Beth Wheeler (a.k.a. “Muttonhead”) is a free-lance fiber artist, product-development specialist, author, and instructor. In the past 16 years, she has written more than 46 books for sewing, quilting, craft, and collecting audiences; hundreds of articles for trade and consumer publications; and published her own line of Muttonhead® quilting patterns and products. Beth has been a crafter since age five and a quilter since age 16. She credits her mother and maternal grandmother with inspiration and introduction to early techniques—and access to a Singer featherweight sewing machine. A passion for discovery led her to develop processes for analysis of technique and design. These skills are the basis for her artwork, workshops, articles, books, and products.

Beth lives in Fort Wayne, Indiana with husband Geoffrey and dogs Elsie and Sydney in a house happily crowded with a jumble of fabrics, computers, printers, artwork and projects in progress, and treasured “stuff” too precious to actually use.

Altered Photo Artistry Trunk Show This one-hour program is appropriate for quilt or art groups interested in exploring designs and techniques involved in Altered Photo Artistry. This is a lighthearted adventure, with lots of samples and examples, demos and handouts. We've made many mistakes while developing and refining this technique so you don't have to!

1 hour $200
Altered Photo Artistry Wall Hanging Workshop Basic sewing and quilting skills are recommended; knowledge of free-motion quilting is a plus, but not necessary. Participants will complete a panel (approximately 16" x 20") from a photograph, ready for binding or framing. all day $60/person
Altered Photo Artistry Postcard Workshop This is a fun class for those who have little or no experience with free-motion stitching. Participants will combine altered-photo and free-motion techniques in a fabric postcard from a photo they bring ready to be displayed or shared with someone special. An inspirational message will be added 3 hours $30/person
Quilties. Workshop
Participants will complete a whimsical 6" x 6" mini collage quilt, complete with its own beaded-wire hanger. These little quilts are like potato chips: You can’t make just one!
4 hours $40/person
The Joy of Rust Dyeing Workshop This three-hour workshop is a lively exploration of rust-dyeing techniques. The first half of the workshop is devoted to understanding the rust process and how rusted effects are created. Students will leave with two fabric packets “marinating” for rinsing and drying the following day. The second half provides the opportunity to apply surface-design techniques to create a complex base for a fabric postcard, greeting card or quiltie. 3 hours $30/person
 plus $10 materials cost
Technology in the Quilt Studio Workshop
In this 6-hour workshop students will explore various ways the computer, digital camera, scanner, and inkjet printer can influence and aid quilt design. The computer can be a layout tool to plan block placement and color variations, it can correct and heal less-than-perfect photos, it can be a drawing and painting tool, and it can open a door to a world of artistic possibilities. Using Photoshop Elements software application, we'll see just how far we can push the artistic envelope! It is not necessary to bring your own computer in the workshop, but it is helpful.
all day $60/person
